Lucha Libre: Unforgettable Mexico City Experience Tour

Going to Lucha Libre, also known as Mexican Wrestling, is a right of passage in Mexico City. Lucha Libre is known for its luchadores (wrestlers), colorful masks, pageantry, and flying wrestling moves. If you are looking for an unforgettable Mexico City experience tour, here is your chance! But first, learn from my mistakes to ensure your Lucha Libre experience is memorable (in a good way).

Luchadores (Mexican Lucha Libre wrestlers) duke it out in Arena Mexico in a battle of good VS evil (‘tecnicos’ vs ‘rudos’)

Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of going to a Lucha Libre event and meeting a real live Mexican luchador in person. My parents always brought me home a few luchador masks each time they returned from Mexico, until I had quite the collection going. When I moved to Mexico, booking an unforgettable Mexico City experience tour to see Lucha Libre was at the top of my bucket list. Last week, my dreams came true and I got to see my first Lucha Libre fight. In fact, I went twice!

If at first you don’t succeed

My first Lucha Libre experience left a lot to be desired. It was an unforgettable Mexico City experience tour, but not in a good way. I won’t name the hosts because I hold no grudges and they’re not bad people. However, the experience was overpriced for what it was and, if you keep reading, you’ll see why I recommend selecting your experience carefully. None of the photos in this article are from that day.

The group got very drunk beforehand, the rules and history were not explained properly, the seats were far away, and we only saw 2 of the 5 matches because we arrived very late. They told us the first ones were boring. However, now that I’ve gone again and saw all 5 matches, I know this is not true. To make matters worse the hosts completely disregarded my food allergy, which I mentioned multiple times in English and Spanish, nearly sending me into anaphylactic shock at a taqueria before we even arrived at the arena. Needless to say, my childhood dreams were crushed.

The Best Lucha Libre Mexican Wrestling Experience Tour in Mexico City

Enter Daniel Alejandro (Danny) to save the day - A Mexico City local in shining armour who provided a truly memorable experience (in a good way)! I’m beginning to think Danny gives tours solely to share his contagious love of Mexican wrestling. The cost of his tour is the same as others on Airbnb, yet the experience he provides is on a whole different level. Sure you could potentially save $10-20 by going with someone else (like the hosts I went with the first time), but you may end up having a bad experience and essentially throwing away your money. By the way, I have no working relationship with Danny and I am not being compensated for this article. I just want you to be aware of your options.

Before going to Arena Mexico to see the fight, we met at a local taqueria to grab some yummy authentic Mexican food. While we ate, Danny had prepared a visual presentation to explain the history, rules, and different wrestlers. He also had a quick quiz for us at the end which was extremely unique and fun. It’s all about the small details folks, and Danny is big on providing the best experience! By the way, Tacontento is a great taqueria to visit if you are craving authentic Mexican food that is reasonably priced.

After the taqueria we headed to the fight and, to our delight, Danny had ringside tickets for us in the first row! I knew he guaranteed seats within the first eight rows, but I wasn’t expecting front-row tickets. I was extremely excited to be so close to the action.

Danny’s love of Lucha Libre was contagious and we were all screaming and cheering at the top of our lungs alongside him (even the shy members of the group). To add to this unforgettable Mexico City experience tour, we each had an opportunity to have our photo take with a wrestler (another benefit of having ringside seats along the catwalk).

The overall experience with Danny was an incredible experience I will never forget! If you have an opportunity to see a Lucha Libre fight in Mexico City, I have zero hesitation in recommending this tour with Danny. Be sure to check out Danny’s Instagram to see photos and videos from his tours.
